No. The petals are designed to fold back upon impact rather than detach. Occasionally, a petal may tear away, but with our new thermoplastic urethane (TPU) material, this does not happen very often.
The petals fold back as the system penetrates, creating additional trauma while helping transfer the bolt’s kinetic energy into the animal.
Yes. The Backdraft/Black Rhino has been professionally inspected and airfoil tested by I-Hi Turbocharging in Illinois.
Although the Backdraft weighs 111 grains, it is engineered to deliver exceptional flight characteristics and accuracy. In our testing, the Backdraft consistently impacts in the same place as our field points.
Yes—but only after impact. Once impact occurs, the petals deploy behind the leading cutting edge and create a significantly larger wound channel. That increased resistance slows the bolt as its kinetic energy is transferred into the animal.
The system is not designed to slow the bolt during flight. The slowdown occurs after impact, as the deployed petals increase resistance and the bolt does more work through the wound channel.
The Backdraft/Black Rhino is specifically engineered to keep the complete system at its designed weight while providing exceptional strength and durability.
The ferrule is manufactured from 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum, while the blades are made from 440 stainless steel with a stainless steel tip. The entire portion of the ferrule exposed above the arrow insert is supported by the backs of the blades, creating an exceptionally strong aluminum ferrule system.
The Backdraft and Black Rhino cartridges are made from TPU (thermoplastic urethane). We’ve added polystyrene to give the cartridge the rigid feel needed to keep the petals stable during flight. These units have been tested with 1,000 feet-per-second air blasts with no deformation of the petals.
There are no O-rings and no detent dimples required to hold the petals in place. The material itself keeps the cartridge stable during flight and is engineered to deform upon impact.
The cartridge is a single-use, disposable component. Do not re-shoot a cartridge after it has been used or impacted.
Each kit includes 10 cartridges, and additional replacement cartridges are available separately.
Yes, in some cases.NOT RECOMMENDED. Some of our customers successfully used the Backdraft cartridge behind other broadheads, including the Montec, while turkey hunting last year.
The primary concern when using our cartridge with another broadhead is thread engagement. The Backdraft/Black Rhino cartridge takes up approximately 1/8 inch of space between the broadhead and the arrow or bolt insert. Many conventional broadheads were not designed with enough additional threaded stem length to compensate for that space, which may result in insufficient thread engagement.
Our Backdraft/Black Rhino is specifically designed with a longer threaded stem and deeper threads to accommodate the cartridge and provide secure thread engagement and solid lockup in the insert.
For that reason, even though the cartridge may physically work with certain other broadheads, we recommend using it with the Backdraft / Black Rhino Broadheads, which are specifically engineered for the complete system.
Yes. and NO. The broadhead can be reused. The Backdraft and Black rhino broadheads are designed to be used multiple times, provided it remains undamaged and in good condition.
The blades are sharpened at an angle that makes them easy to touch up. Simply strop the blades side to side, rotate the broadhead, and repeat until the cutting edges are sharp again.
The cartridge, however, is single-use only. Once a cartridge has been shot or impacted, it may become eccentric or deformed, which can cause erratic flight if it is used again.
Always replace both the cartridge and washer after every shot. Never re-shoot a used cartridge.
The Backdraft complete system weighs 111 grains. That includes the broadhead, cupped washer, and TPU cartridge.
The Black Rhino complete system weighs 100 grains, including the broadhead, washer, and cartridge.
Coming soon: An additional washer setup will allow you to configure the system to 125 grains for shooters who prefer a heavier setup.
No. If your crossbow is properly tuned and consistently grouping with field tips, our system is designed to impact in the same location.
Based on our testing, here are some examples of what we have experienced:
At approximately 380 FPS, we have seen field-tip-like impact out to roughly 35–40 yards, after which some additional drop may become noticeable.
At 400–440 FPS, we have experienced similar points of impact out to approximately 50 yards, and in some setups as far as 55 yards, depending on the crossbow and overall setup.
At 460–500 FPS, our testing has produced extremely consistent points of impact at 70 and 80 yards, and in some setups even farther.
At speeds above 500 FPS, we have successfully hit balloons at 100 yards with both field tips and the Backdraft System.
These distances reflect our accuracy testing, not recommended hunting distances. Always confirm your own point of impact with your specific crossbow, bolt, and setup before hunting.
Bottom line: If your crossbow is tuned and grouping with field tips, start with the same point of aim and verify your Backdraft System on the range.
The Backdraft System requires a minimum of approximately 110 ft-lbs of kinetic energy for proper performance. As a general reference, many crossbows shooting approximately 390 FPS and above can produce this level of kinetic energy, depending on the total weight of the bolt and complete setup.
The Black Rhino requires significantly less kinetic energy—approximately 65 ft-lbs or more. Its additional outside-hinge cut allows the cartridge to deploy with less energy than the Backdraft design.
This makes the Black Rhino an excellent option not only for crossbows, but also for higher-poundage compound bows capable of generating 65 ft-lbs or more of kinetic energy.
Always calculate kinetic energy using the actual speed and total arrow or bolt weight of your setup rather than relying on FPS alone.
There is no single effective range that applies to every hunter or every setup. Your effective range is something you need to determine through practice and testing with your own equipment.
Every crossbow and compound bow performs differently. Speed, arrow or bolt weight, overall setup, accuracy, and—most importantly—the shooter's ability all play a role in determining an ethical hunting distance.
At Deadly Kinetics, we promote ethical, reliable, quick, and clean kills. The distances we shoot during testing may not be the distances you should shoot while hunting. You may be capable of shooting farther, or you may choose to stay well within those distances.
Know your equipment. Test the system. Know your limitations. Take ethical shots.
The goal isn't how far you can shoot. The goal is to make every hunting shot count and deliver a quick, clean, ethical kill.
No. The Backdraft/Black Rhino cartridge is not designed to function as a traditional cutting blade. It is engineered to pierce, spread, and deform upon impact, allowing the fixed-blade broadhead to create an opening larger than the broadhead's cutting diameter alone.
After deployment, the hooks on the inside of the cartridge are very sharp, but they are not designed as additional cutting blades. Their purpose is to engage tissue, increase resistance, and create additional trauma as the broadhead continues through the animal.
The fixed blades cut. The cartridge pierces, spreads, and creates trauma.
